McMinnville was named after Joseph McMinn, who served as the speaker of the Tennessee Senate when the county was established, and went on to become one of the highly esteemed Governors of our State. Settlement progressed swiftly, as people initially occupied the river valleys before moving on to the less fertile and mountainous areas. In 1810, the county had a population of 5725. By 1820, the population had increased to 10,348, and by 1830, it reached 15,351. During its creation, the county originally spanned around 900 square miles. However, the formation of Cannon, Coffee, Dekalb, Van Buren, and Grundy counties between 1836 and 1844 resulted in a reduction to 443 square miles. All of these counties were created from a section of Warren County. Ever since the establishment of counties as outlined in the constitution adopted in 1834, it was mandated that no county boundary could be within 12 miles of the county seat of the county it was formed from. As a result, each new county marked its boundary with Warren in a 12 mile arc. By 1844, Warren County had taken on a nearly circular shape, earning it the playful nickname of “the round county.”
