It can be desirable to freeze public instances during freeze periods or for maintenance while swapping author instances or scaling out public instances.

Freeze introduces a global freeze flag that can be set through Magnolia's REST API. When set, the flag temporarily prevents publication on author instances freezing the current state of all public instances.

During the freeze, authors can continue to work in the system but they cannot publish content.
